It is a special day.  After about seven seconds of instruction, my daughter now knows how to get me a beer.  A lot of dad’s might complain about being left home all day with two kids on the first Saturday of college football.  Lemons, meet Lemonade.

A couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Nate and drinking his homebrew.  Homebrewing is something that has peaked my interest in the past, but not something I felt like investing in.  It is money for materials.  It is personal time and space.  And at the end of it all, you are left with the risk of crafting something not that great.  I prefer just taking my money and buying a beer I know I can enjoy.
Nate’s homebrew was great.  Nate and his friend Mike make such excellent homebrew, they are now undertaking the task of starting their own nano brewery, Wilderness Brewing.  Making that jump also requires more money for larger quantities of materials and larger capacity equipment.  This is where you and I come in.
Please visit the Wilderness Brewing Kickstarter page and lend Nate and Mike your support.  They have a nice company graphic (above) which I stole from their Facebook.  There is a fantastic video letting you know who they are and what they plan to accomplish.  I believe in what Nate and Mike are trying to accomplish, and hopefully you will to.

The final stop on my Stone tour took me to the Flying Saucer.  After spending a few hours drinking Stone beers, I just felt the need to break away from the mundane nature of double IPAs and imperial stouts and experience the master craftsmanship that goes into triple-hop brewing.  It’s probably a good idea that I left before this happened.
The Flying Saucer will be hosting another Stone event Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:45.  It coincides with their normal glass night event, so if you want to try some Stone beers and complete your Cheech & Chong barware set at the same time, I suggest you check it out.

While the second stop on the Stone tour actually took me to Gomer’s Midtown, which has a lovely selection of fine Stone beers, the next highlight was at Blanc.  In anticipation for Stone’s arrival, Blanc rolled out the ARROGANT BURGER featuring:

8oz Vintage beef patty with a Stone Smoked Porter, spiced chipotle BBQ sauce, a “Stone” peach chutney, Frisee, and smoked gouda on an Bacon Brioche Bun from Farm To Market.

This thing was delicious.  While Blanc is done hosting Stone events, you will be able to purchase Stone beers and the ARROGANT BURGER at the Plaza location all week.

The first portion of my journey into the world of Stone beers started at 10AM at the Foundry.  A “press conference” of sorts was arranged for local beer blogger types to interact with the folks from Stone, namely co-founder and CEO Greg Koch.  We tried a few beers (Cali-Belgique, IPA, Arrogant Bastard, and Sublimely Self-Righteous in order of my preference), I gorged myself on some Hippie Sliders, and Greg was kind enough to provide us with some background and ideology.  While I may not agree with everything he said, I have a great amount of respect for a brewery that is successfully expanding distribution to two states while so many other craft breweries are currently pulling out of states to meet demand in others.
But to explain the picture…Koch is known for taking pictures featuring the “Greg Face.”  So I go in with the intention to have my own face in the event I posed in any pictures with the man.  Little did I know, said picture would feature no Greg Face.  The hands-in-pockets isolation from the other three really completes the look.
The Foundry will be featuring a Stone “Total Tap Takeover” tomorrow night at 8, which you should definitely check out.  The guys from Stone will be there, so you will have your very own chance to use the “Joe Face.”

Here’s your road map to finding fresh Stone beers and meeting the men behind the beers.  If drinking in public isn’t your thing, bombers and six-packs of a variety of Stone beers are hitting liquor store shelves this morning.

Kirin Ichiban
Is it really an import when brewed by InBev in Los Angeles under the “supervision” of the Kirin brewmaster?  I guess it really was “Brewed for Good Times” since I cracked it open while listening to some Death Certificate and watching Outdoorsman.
